Supporting Our Veterans

America owes a debt to its veterans for their service and dedication to protecting our country.  It is our responsibility, at the very least, to provide adequate care and support for veterans in gratitude for the sacrifices they made for our nation.  In my over seven years of public service I have led many efforts to support our state’s veterans.  In 2004, my efforts won me the Legislator of the Year Award from the Disabled Veterans of Massachusetts.

What Senator Barrios Has Done

Disabled Veterans License Plate

In 2004, I wrote and passed a bill to update the license plate for disabled veterans.  Before my bill, disabled veterans were given handicapped placards that were recognized only by Massachusetts officials and were expected to hang these placards from their rear-view mirrors.  Because these placards were state-specific and hard to see, Massachusetts residents often received parking tickets and even got their cars towed when traveling out of state.

Disabled veterans will now be receiving license plates that feature the international handicapped symbol, recognized by all U.S. authorities.  Massachusetts now shows its veterans greater respect by not subjecting them to unnecessary inconveniences when away from home.

Extend Property Tax Exemption for Spouses of Disabled Veterans

Honoring veterans also means respecting their loved ones.  While serving as a state representative, I authored a bill to extend property tax exemptions to spouses of disabled veterans even after the death of their spouse.

Support for Veterans Health Care and Other Programs

I have always supported funding for veterans health care and other programs that help repay our nation’s debt those who served our country.
