News Release
Statement of Senator Barrios on RESCO Being Honored with a 2003 "Dirty Dozen" Award "The RESCO incinerator has long been a health hazard for the residents of Saugus and today's Dirty Dozen award thankfully recognizes the severity of the threat that toxic ash and unsafe emissions have on the incinerator's Saugus neighbors. By opposing the expansion of the third burner at RESCO, Saugus residents deserve praise for fighting tirelessly to help make our region a cleaner and healthier place to live." "Both the Saugus River Watershed Council and the Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment have been working hard in opposition to the third burner and as their Senator I have always been happy to support them in whatever way possible. I congratulate them on their effective community organizing work and will continue to stand by their efforts in the future. The state's worst polluters cannot be allowed to sacrifice the health of our children and families." Background: On December 2, 2003 the RESCO Incinerator in Saugus was awarded a 2003 Dirty Dozen award by the Toxics Action Center, Saugus River Watershed Council and the Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment. The awards were created to spotlight twelve of the Commonwealth's top polluters. The RESCO incinerator has proposed expanded to include a third burner, a plan that was widely opposed by residents and elected officials. # # #
