Barrios Pledges to Help Protect State Aid to Libraries

Senator Barrios meets with local librarians and reaffirms his support for local library funding. Seated with the Senator are (from L to R): Mary Rose Quinn, Saugus Library Director; Lisa Navarro, Everett Library's Director of Circulation; Deb Abraham, Everett Library's Director; Marie Tozzi, member of Everett Library Board of Trustees.

Boston, MA -- Senator Jarrett T. Barrios met this month with Everett and Saugus librarians to discuss the effect of recent budget cuts on local libraries. In the meeting, Barrios re-iterated his strong support for funding the services community libraries provide, including children's events and increased access to computers and the internet. Both Saugus and Everett were some of the first libraries in the state to install wireless technology in their buildings.

"We must protect the essential community services that libraries provide for local families and children," said Senator Barrios. "Our libraries can't afford any more devastating budget cuts that would further compromise their hours of operation and staffing levels."

The Governor's proposed FY'05 budget drastically cuts funding for telecommunications and internet, which allow libraries to provide more efficient services for residents. "I'll do everything I can to bolster our libraries' telecommunication budgets," Barrios promised the local librarians.
