MassEquality Statement

MassEquality and Members of the Legislature Who Have Consistently Opposed Writing Discrimination Into The Constitution Issued The Following Statement:

“Today many legislators who oppose writing discrimination into the Constitution voted two times to substitute the Travaglini amendment in order to defeat the discriminatory and misleading Loscocco and Travis amendments.”

“Those two votes were procedural votes. The most significant vote was the third vote, the vote to kill the Travaglini amendment.

“These legislators have just voted to DEFEAT the Travaglini amendment on the third vote--the first opportunity to vote on the merits of this amendment. The Travaglini amendment, like the others, discriminates against gay and lesbian couples and their families. We remain opposed to writing discrimination into our state’s constitution, and to denying basic rights and protections of marriage guaranteed to citizens of the Commonwealth.”

“We at MassEquality are extremely grateful to these heroic legislators who stand with us in seeking to ensure that there is no discrimination in our state constitution. We fully support their votes and actions.”
