Bill To Allow Prescription Drug Reimportation Will Clear Major Legislative Hurdle Today

Massachusetts would become 3rd state in the nation to provide reimportation information as AARP Massachusetts prepares to announce its endorsement

On Thursday March 18 at 11:30am, seniors groups and legislators will celebrate a significant step forward in the progress of a bill that would make Massachusetts a national leader in providing residents with information on how to import prescription drugs from Canada. The bill's sponsors, Senator Jarrett T. Barrios (D-Cambridge), Representative Michael Festa (D-Melrose), and Barbara L'Italien (D-Andover) will join health care leaders in Room A-2 at 11:30AM to announce that the Joint Committee on Health Care has released the Prescription Drug Price Reduction Act favorably for consideration by the Senate and House.

WHAT: Seniors groups, health care leaders, and legislators celebrate a significant step forward for a bill that would make Massachusetts a national model for helping seniors and sick people save money by reimporting prescription drugs from Canada, and to announce major new support for the legislation.

WHEN: THURSDAY, March 18 at 11:30 AM
WHERE: ROOM A-2, State House

Nearly 67% of those Americans surveyed in a recent Associated Press poll said that government should make it easier to buy cheaper prescription drugs from Canada and other countries. In recent months Minnesota and Wisconsin have launched websites to promote reimportation but the plan laid out in the Barrios/Festa bill would take those programs a step further by assuring patient safety by only providing information on accredited Canadian pharmacies. The bill would also direct the Governor to apply for a federal waiver to exempt the state from federal law currently prohibiting reimportation.
