Barrios To Gov: Furniture Follies Abound

(Boston) Recounting his own harrowing experience with getting furniture for his Senate office, State Senator Jarrett T. Barrios today complemented the Governor for "such strong advocacy on behalf of the State House furniture."

"I've held countless hours of meetings with chairs and sofas in the Senate Reading room and in my office. They are all struggling to stay together because they haven't been replaced in years," said Senator Barrios. "And while, according to his spokeswoman, the Governor's Office is the 'center of activity in the building' I hope he wakes up to the fact that the rest of us would like new furniture too."

Because of severely constricted Senate operating budget, Senator Barrios spent the first few months of his tenure in the Senate without office furniture. After weeks of visiting yard sales and requesting donations the energy paid off when he was finally able to find some chairs and a conference table to include in his office. He spent his own money on a fax for the office.

"I'm glad the Governor wants a comfortable seat to sit on," said Senator Barrios. "All I'd ask is that I get first dibs on his old furniture. "

The Governor's Office on Wednesday released a request for the lowest bid to replace furniture in the Executive Office, leaving the rest of the State House to languish. Last year the Governor vetoed a move by the Senate to update their antiquated computer system even though he spent thousands of dollars in tax money buying new computers and digital cameras for the Executive Suite in his first months in office.
