News Release
Senator Jarrett Barrios
Sworn Into Second Term (Boston, MA) Senator Jarrett T. Barrios was sworn into his second term of office at a State House ceremony last week. Barrios was re-elected in November to the Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex State Senate District after a previous two year term marked by a host of legislative accomplishments, particularly on affordable housing, health care and public safety. “I’m looking forward to continue fighting for affordable health care, safer streets and a quality education for all our children,” said Senator Barrios. “I am so very proud to continue serving the people of my district and thank them for all their support over the past two years.” Consumer protect measures will also highlight Barrios’ 2005 priorities. The Senator joined forces with consumer protection group MASSPIRG to push a Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights and Cell Phone Users Bills of Rights that will require companies to disclose fees and small print so that consumers know the actual terms of their sale. He has also filed the Personal Information Protection Act to make sure companies don’t use consumer’s personal information without their consent. “New technologies mean that consumer’s privacy is increasingly compromised and we can’t allow that personal data to get into the wrong hands and used for criminal purpose,” said Barrios. He has also written bills to boost affordable housing production, find out what it will take to make sure every student can succeed at school and filed the first state legislation in the country to provide a legal route for US citizens to purchase affordable prescription drugs from Canada. In the Senate, Barrios chairs the Public Safety Committee, where he successfully fought to overhaul the state’s fire safety law, provide more resources to local police and fire departments, and ban the sale of assault weapons. In late January, Barrios is expected to announce the details of his statewide anti-gang agenda that includes stronger protections for witnesses in gang cases, stricter criminal penalties for illegal gun possession, and will funnel much-needed resources to community-based programs that build bridges between police and neighborhood leaders. ### |
