(Boston, MA) One hundred years ago in Massachusetts the Red Cross received its first Congressional Charter to provide assistance to victims of disaster. On Tuesday, Senator Jarrett T. Barrios joined Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and American Red Cross Massachusetts Bay C.E.O. Deborah Jackson at the State House to celebrate the Red Cross’ centennial of service to Massachusetts residents.

“Whether it’s a house fire at three in the morning or a large-scale natural disaster, the Red Cross always stands at the ready to provide food and shelter to those who desperately need it,” said Senator Barrios, who recently joined the Board of Directors of  the American Red Cross Massachusetts Bay Chapter. “We’re here to thank them for their years of hard work and continued commitment to community service.”

While serving in the House of Representatives Barrios successfully fought for a change in state law to provide state employees with a maximum of 15 calendar days of paid leave each year to serve on American Red Cross disaster relief operations. The “Disaster Leave Volunteer Act” was signed into law by Acting Governor Jane Swift on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 and became effective retroactively on September 11, 2001.

At the State House ceremony Senator Barrios presented the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay with a State Senate proclamation recognizing March 2005 as “American Red Cross Month.”

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay, founded in 1905 and one of the ten largest Red Cross chapters in the nation, is responsible for providing services across 127 cities and towns in eastern Massachusetts with a combined population of nearly four million.
