TRAVAGLINI, BARRIOS ANNOUNCES NEW SENATE PLAN TO BOOST REVERE’S SCHOOL AID

BY $3.6 million

Senate President Robert Travaglini and Senator Jarrett Barrios today announced that a new State Senate budget plan would boost state aid for Revere’s schools by just over $3.6 million.  The plan also increases spending on teachers that work with, special education, low-income student and English language learners.  Finally, the plan guarantees that cities and towns will get, at a minimum, 20% of their foundation budget from the state.

“Every student deserves the best education possible and this proposed increase in state education funding will go a long way in helping Chelsea’s schools,” said Senator Barrios.  “I’ll continue to fight for more education funding because we can’t expect cities and towns to do it alone.”

School leaders welcomed the proposed increase in state aid, saying it was especially important to continue the state’s commitment to special needs, low-income and English language learning students.

After the Senate budget is released it will be debated in late May and then the House and Senate will meet in a conference committee to finalize the budget before it is sent to the Governor to be signed into law. The 2007 fiscal year begins July 1st.

“Communities are literally crying out for assistance. The Senate has heard those pleas, and has stepped up to the plate,” said Senator Therese Murray, Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. “In particular, the overhaul of the Chapter 70 funding formula is the most significant change in this proposal.  It is a bold, comprehensive plan that addresses the inequities of the current formula and the inadequacies in the money communities receive from the state.”
